Dust extraction is a vital part of most industries and in recent decades with a greater focus on employer responsibilities and safe working methods for employees, attention to and accountability on this part of any organisation's process has been escalated to match compliance and ethical pressures.

Why is some Dust Extraction inadequate ?

The principles of dust extraction is basic physics and information on air flows vs duct diameters, cloth to air filter ratios etc are well documented in publications going back to the 1970's.  Despite this, many companies across a range of industries have been reluctant to spend money on good efficient extraction, due to ignorance or purchasing restraints: money spent on new plant and equipment to increase production capacity is easy to sign off for investment funding, but spending money to make a safer working environment that seemingly does not alter output, was always a harder meeting to have.

Consequences of poor dust managment choices

As a consequence of poor advice, many, (but not all), companies previously installed improvements to help air quality that were the cheapest solution tendered - maybe a ceiling fan, a series of small portable extractors that block up and leak dangerous invisible dust, a system that is just simply inadequate for the dust load and air volumes, especially if a factory has been reconfigured and machines added after inital commissioning. Many of these solutions may have been offered by HVAC specialists whose expertise lies in contolling whole environments, not LEV, which focuses on dealing with the dust issue exactly where the dust is generated. 

Generally however, organisations in nearly all Australasian industries have failed to keep up with the advances in technology, and innovative features made available, for dust extraction developed by key leading European suppliers over 20 years ago.

VFV™ stands for Vertical Flameless Venting and is the latest and safest Dust Explosion release currently available.

Venting via an explosion membrane is often placed on the side of the filter unit meaning to correctly follow safe work practice, an exclusion zone should be marked up and enforced directly in front of the panel for a minimum distance of 20m. This is frequently ignored when dust extraction solutions are designed and the filter position is confirmed, meaning an explosion membrane may face a car park, a building with glass windows, all putting unsuspecting passersby at risk in the unlikely event an explosion occurs.

Placing the explosion membrane on the roof of the filter ensures no one can be harmed other than an unsuspecting seagull. The explosion force is VERTICAL.

Many dust extraction providers promote their explosion membranes as being safe dust handling practise, however only VFV™ from Ebcam offers flameless venting. Our unique VFV™ feature means no flame is released from the unit - any fire is contained within the filter itself and only the shockwave actually is released via the ATEX approved vent. 

Safe Membrane explosion release is not about retro fitting a panel to an existing  outdated filter unit. Safe membrane release requires the entire filter unit, with is associated release membrane to be designed as a cohesive unit and strong enough to withstand any explosion, with out panels and nuts and bolts being launched into the air harming anything in their path.
